Card payments and test mode

Practise payments safely in test mode, then switch on a real provider, place one small real order and refund it.

Updated Oct 25, 2026

Shoppers can pay by card, PayPal or at pickup. Card details are typed on the payment company's own page or form, so they are never stored on your site.

Test mode first

Test mode is a card form that behaves like the real one. No money moves. Use it for training and to check your set-up. Stripe's published test card number 4242 4242 4242 4242 works in Stripe's test mode. On a live store, every payment method starts switched off.

Ways to pay

  • Stripe. The shopper goes to Stripe's hosted payment page and returns to the order page.
  • Square. The shopper goes to a Square checkout page and returns.
  • PayPal. The shopper approves on PayPal and returns.
  • Pay when you pick up. You take payment at the register on collection.

Stripe, Square and PayPal need an account that you open and verify yourself. Our connections to them are written to their documentation and have not yet been run against live accounts here. So a test order, then one small real order, is the way to prove yours.

Switch a provider on

  1. Open Payments, then Payment methods.
  2. On the provider's card, paste its keys. They are stored encrypted. Leave a box empty to keep what is saved.
  3. Copy the webhook address shown into the provider's dashboard, then paste the signing secret back. A webhook is how the provider tells Pop Street Commerce a payment succeeded, even if the shopper closes the page.
  4. Choose Test mode, tick Offer at checkout and save.
  5. Place a test order on your storefront and check the order and the provider's dashboard.
  6. Switch to Live and switch test mode off.
  7. Place one real small order yourself, then refund it.

What happens to an order

  • Waiting for payment. The items are held for 30 minutes.
  • Paid. The customer gets a confirmation email.
  • Payment fails or the page closes. The shopper can try another card until the hold ends, then the items go back on the shelf.

Refunds

Open Payments, then Transactions, and press Refund next to the payment. Check the amount and add a reason. The money returns through the provider and the customer is emailed. A full refund puts the items back in stock. For disputes and chargebacks, use the provider's own dashboard.

Sales tax

Website orders are taxed by the destination, using a table in Payments. Treat the starting rates as a starting point and confirm them with your accountant. Pop Street Commerce is not tax or legal advice.
