Checked against Pop Dispatch 0.1.0

Pop Dispatch has an import profile for Mitchell 1 exports. It reads customers, vehicles, repair orders and invoices as history, open invoices and drivers.

The column names in the Mitchell 1 profile are a best guess. Mitchell 1 documents no bulk export for shops, so the profile is built from the field names that a conversion page for Mitchell shop databases lists: customer name, address, phone and email, and vehicle year, make, model, engine, VIN and license. Check the columns step on every file and change any choice from its list.

Before you start #

  • You need the owner or manager role.
  • The account holder asks Mitchell 1 client services in writing for exports of customers, vehicles, repair orders and invoices, and asks which file type they send. The Import data page links to the conversion page.
  • The conversion page lists no financial data. Print your financial reports before you switch, because they may be the only record of your earlier figures.
  • Pop Dispatch reads CSV and Excel (.xlsx) files.

Steps #

  1. Open Settings, then Import data, and choose Mitchell 1.
  2. Import customers first. A first and last name in two columns become one name, and a cell phone is used when there is no home phone.
  3. Import vehicles next. A column holding year, make and model together is split into the three fields. Each vehicle finds its customer by customer number, phone, email or name.
  4. Import repair orders and invoices as Service history. Each keeps its number, date and total, and is tied to the customer and the vehicle when they are on file.
  5. Import any unpaid invoices as Open invoices.
  6. For each file, select Check the file, read the problems and select Import.
Technical details
  • A history file with no kind column is read as repair orders for a Mitchell 1 import.
  • Customer numbers from the old system are saved on each customer, so the vehicle and history files find the same customer later.
  • A VIN with the wrong length or an I, O or Q is listed as a problem and that vehicle is left out. A VIN that fails only the check-digit test is kept and flagged.

If something goes wrong #

  • A vehicle row says no customer is on file. Import the customers first, or tick Add a customer when a row names one that has no record yet and include the customer's name in the file.
  • See Fixing import problems for every message.
