Hosting options: ours or yours

Run Pop Street Commerce on our servers or on hosting you already pay for, and move between the two when you want.

Hosting means the computer where your store lives and answers customers. You have two choices, and the same Pop Street Commerce package runs on both.

On our hosting

We run it for you. You sign in and sell. This is the way your pilot runs, and it can stay that way if you prefer. Your agreement says what we look after, including backups.

On your hosting

We set Pop Street Commerce up on hosting you already pay for, with your own domain name. You keep the hosting account. We install it, connect your domain and issue your licence for that address.

Your hosting needs a database and a way to run a small task every few minutes. If your host cannot run a scheduled task, Pop Street Commerce still works. It runs its checks when someone opens a page, so marketplace orders may appear a little later.

Moving between the two

You can move whenever you like. Ask us, and we will:

  1. Copy your store and its data to the new home.
  2. Move your licence to the new web address. See Licences explained.
  3. Check the storefront, checkout and a test order.

Marketplace connections are tied to your web address. After a move, some may need approving again. We will tell you which, and why. See Connecting a marketplace.

One technical point worth knowing: Pop Street Commerce stores your keys and connections encrypted using a secret code held on the server. We take care to carry that code across when we move you. If it were ever lost, saved keys would need entering again.

Backups

Whoever hosts your store should make sure a nightly backup of the database exists. Before your first real sale, ask us to confirm it, whichever option you chose. If you host it yourself, ask your hosting company how their backups work.

Which should you pick?

Pick ours if you want the least to think about. Pick yours if you already pay for hosting, or you want everything under your own account. If you are unsure, start on ours and move later.
